Sydney – Springbok loose forward Schalk Burger believes he might have cracked a rib in South Africa’s 32-29 Tri-Nations victory against the All Blacks in Hamilton, New Zealand, on Saturday.
Juan Smith, who is suffering from a lower back injury, failed a fitness test on the morning of the Test and Burger was drafted into the starting line-up as late replacement.
The loose trio of Pierre Spies, Heinrich Brüssow and Burger however combined well. Burger had just started to regain his form of old when he had to leave the field in the 68th minute with a suspected broken rib and was replaced by Ryan Kankowski on the side of the scrum.
“I think one of my ribs is broken. You can feel the bone sticking out here,” he said at Auckland airport before the team’s departure via Sydney for South Africa on Monday.
“At this stage I don’t know how serious it is. I will go to the Western Province High Performance centre in Bellville to ask the doctor to assess the extent of the injury.”
Burger has not played much rugby recently. He was suspended for eight weeks after he was found guilty of making reckless contact in the eye area Irish centre Luke Fitzgerald during the British and Irish Lions series.
Free Stater Heinrich Brüssow stepped into the team in Burger’s absence and grabbed his opportunity with both hands. As a result the fiery WP loose forward has struggled to regain his place in the Bok starting line-up.
“I would really have loved to be able to play in the Currie Cup for WP again, but now it seems that is not going to happen. I will have to wait to hear what the doctors have to say. I have already experienced a broken rib in the past and this injury feels the same to me,” said a disappointed Burger.

@JimT – 299 Players I ‘dislike’ – Toby Flood, for shoving Percy like he did and getting away with it!!
@smallies72 – 296 But both Thorne & Bakkies have a sense of humour about their shenanigans, which I find appealing. 🙂
@JimT – 300 I won’t give away the ending!!
It will end in tears for ‘your boys’ though!!!
Do we have any Kiwis here yet?
@carol – 301 I bet you hate anybody that’s ever breathed upon Percy. You probably don’t like his hair stylist 🙂
@JimT – Do you realy want to traumatise your self again?
@JimT – 302 Bakkies ‘smirks’, it is cute!
@carol – 303 There’s a rumour that the outcome is different on the 2nd viewing, you think? 🙂
@JimT – 304, actually he need a bit of a trim at the moment!
Tasmin is neglecting him!
@JimT – Not the rumour that Frans 60m kick went ‘under’ the bar!!! Hahahah
@JimT – My all time faf is when bakkies just messes his victems hair up and smiles at him .classic
@smallies72 – 305 It is called being a glutton for punnishment!
@smallies72 – 305 Must admit I’m having 2nd thoughts. Maybe this time I’ll take my rage out on Graham Henry. He made a fatal selection this time with Donald. It disrupted Carter’s game & we also saw that Toeva had the legs on the Boks backline when he came on. He was a real threat & Donald was the opposite. Black mark against GH for this one. 🙁
@smallies72 – 310, just like I said – ‘Cute’ !!
@carol – 306 Yes he does have a certain charm about his roguery, I like that. Bet you can have a decent beer with him afterwards too.
@carol – 308 I thought that too. If he took his cap off it would fall all over his face. It must be catching from Frans. A paid of moppets those two. Whatever happened to pony tails to clean things up? 🙂
ok i.m done for the day,cheers mates see you when the sun is here again
@carol – 309 I think the refs should check the balls before & after he kicks. Something suspect there. 🙂
@carol – 311 Perhaps masochism? 🙂
@smallies72 – Cheers Smallies. Just leaves Carol to taunt me. 🙁
@smallies72 – See you ‘Little One’ !! 😉
@carol – 320 I like that “little one” weighing in at 134 kgs 🙂
@JimT – Would I taunt you? Noooo, I am going to sign off too, night Jim and enjoy the rest of your day!!
@carol – 322 goodnight Carol.
Morning all 🙂
Maybe he broken his rib on his Captains nose ? 😉
