Sydney – Springbok loose forward Schalk Burger believes he might have cracked a rib in South Africa’s 32-29 Tri-Nations victory against the All Blacks in Hamilton, New Zealand, on Saturday.
Juan Smith, who is suffering from a lower back injury, failed a fitness test on the morning of the Test and Burger was drafted into the starting line-up as late replacement.
The loose trio of Pierre Spies, Heinrich Brüssow and Burger however combined well. Burger had just started to regain his form of old when he had to leave the field in the 68th minute with a suspected broken rib and was replaced by Ryan Kankowski on the side of the scrum.
“I think one of my ribs is broken. You can feel the bone sticking out here,” he said at Auckland airport before the team’s departure via Sydney for South Africa on Monday.
“At this stage I don’t know how serious it is. I will go to the Western Province High Performance centre in Bellville to ask the doctor to assess the extent of the injury.”
Burger has not played much rugby recently. He was suspended for eight weeks after he was found guilty of making reckless contact in the eye area Irish centre Luke Fitzgerald during the British and Irish Lions series.
Free Stater Heinrich Brüssow stepped into the team in Burger’s absence and grabbed his opportunity with both hands. As a result the fiery WP loose forward has struggled to regain his place in the Bok starting line-up.
“I would really have loved to be able to play in the Currie Cup for WP again, but now it seems that is not going to happen. I will have to wait to hear what the doctors have to say. I have already experienced a broken rib in the past and this injury feels the same to me,” said a disappointed Burger.

@superBul – 263 You guys are no help. I guess I’ll have to sit down with PDV & we will sort this out 🙂
270@JimT – Timebomb waiting to explode. 😆
Okay I am out of here now.
Cheers all enjoy the rest of your evening. Catch up again tomorrow.
@JimT – Evening Jim….Poor old All Blacks!! Heheheheh
@Puma – Cheers Puma. Enjoy your evening.
@Puma – Night Puma, by the way my dogs will not walk themselves, they hang about the farmyard hoping for a rambler or delivery driver to arrive so they can chase them!! That is their idea of excercise!
Enjoy your night cap of water and diet biscuit!!
@carol – 274 Now don’t you go rubbing it in. I was in a black enough mood yesterday. Really got into a rage. Wanted to punch out a few Boks. No particular reason. Just had the urge. In this order: Du Plessis, Brussow, Spies & Habana. Don’t ask me why. I like Bakkies & Burger, but those other guys, grrr 🙁
@JimT – 271
we differ in opinion here. For me Morne did briliant work in all his games, now only 6 starts, 9 in total.
@carol – Eish they are still 9 wins ahead of us. No sympathy from me yet.
@JimT – not boasting mate used to be a tight head that played semi provincial rugga fighting weight was 124kg now 134kg with 15 per body fat
@JimT – but can you imagine how he wil be on the atack
@superBul – 278 But show me where he launched an attack. I don’t remember. If I were the opposing coach I would think he’s easy to contain. Just have to watch for his up & unders. otherwise no real threat. Surely SA can do better? I would still keep him on the team in some capacity (coz he puts points on the board), just not at #10.
@Puma – baai haai
@smallies72 – 280 Jeez. I played both TH & LH & came in soaking wet at 89kg. Now how tall were you? Hopefully very tall so I could get under you & pop you out heh, heh 🙂
@JimT – Well he is the man in there and we will see what the Sharks do to Ruans career. And hopefully Morne and WO can get going again and both remind PdV what they achieved in this years S14.
@JimT – sorry mate 182 cm no luck there.i had big dreams but the old neck and moterbike crashes dont mix
@smallies72 – 286 Ah yes, you would pose a problem my friend. I used to play against guys weighing in at 100-120kgs but they were usually taller than me. Yep you need a strong neck & back. Plus some good grey matter upstairs, especially if you were my weight 🙂
@JimT – there was a lh that playd for fs called piet bester (mighty mouse.)he was 76 on debuut and was never more than 89 but he was pure poison
@JimT – Why dont you like brusow he is such a wel mannered lad
@JimT – Jim although JS did well last Saturday, how do you rate the AB scrum. I feel they are not good and that Australia will beat them upfront. JS played the game of his life but our problems did not disappear.
@smallies72 – 289 I guess he just annoyed me with his treatment of Martyn Williams in the BIL test. It was arrogant, unsportsmanlike & uncalled for 🙁
@superBul – super the ausi are scrumming illigaly if you look closely thy are angling up.franks of the blacks is to young and needs another 3 seasons to come right
@superBul – 290 I think the Aussies could have an edge with Robinson over Franks. But it will probably be a wash. Aussies to clean up at the lineout though.
@smallies72 – 292 You are strictly correct, but I don’t agree with that law. 🙁
@JimT – i liked the old ones better too going up or lying on the lh when he is going up the days when props and hookers were born and the rest to scared to go there
@JimT – i guess that is how we feel about thorne and nonu so it goes both ways
Replay of test now on , 2nd and 3rd minute two good breaks by Morne, but will watch closely.
@superBul – hy kan hol met die bal hy het dan in bloem groot geraak en alle bloen boytjies kan hol met n bal
@smallies72 – 296 yeah I guess you’re right. Everybody has their favourite players to hate 🙂
@superBul – 297 Now you going to prove me wrong, heh, heh. I will watch it again tonight. Maybe I will be more composed the 2nd time around? 🙂
