The Springboks completed a 2009 Tri-Nations WHITE-WASH over the All Blacks and claimed the Tri-Nations title for 2009 by beating their rivals 32 / 29 in a thrilling match which went right to the wire.
The All Blacks clearly showed their intentions early on that they wanted to run the ball at the Bokke and initially they had good field position.
Frans Steyn kicked a monster penalty, from his own 10m line to open the scoring, then added another huge one. He later added a third monster penalty conversion.
Dan Carter pulled the score back repeatedly converting some dodgy penalties into points.
Morne Steyn was equally on song with the boot, calmly slotting a drop goal, 2 penalties and 2 conversions… for his 100% kicking record for the day.
The Springboks scored 2 tries, one through Fourie du Preez, the undoubted BEST RUGBY PLAYER IN THE WORLD, and an intercept try by Jean De Villiers.
The All Blacks also scored 2 tries, one through Sivivatu and one through captain Richie MacCaw.
The game was won up front again, with the Springboks reigning supreme in the line-outs and getting parity in the scrums (with the Bokke absolutely monstering one All Black scrum).
On the deck, the combination between Schalk Burger and Heinrich Brussouw worked almost flawlessly, one complimenting the other.
At the back of the scrum, Pierre Spies had mixed fortunes… battling to pick up ball behind the scrum but putting in some very special tackles.
At the half time break, the Springboks were up 22 / 12.
In the second half the All Blacks gave their all, clawing their way back slowly but surely and when they scored through MacCaw with a couple of minutes to go, it was nail biting stuff.
They nearly scored with time up, but the Springboks held fast to record en epic win.
When Schalk Burger went off injured and Bakkies was subbed, one could again see that it affected the Bokke. In comparison, the All Blacks subs provided more impetus to their game.
The Bokke coaching staff replaced Fourie Du Preez with Ricky Januarie, near the end and also brought on Adi Jacobs, Jannie du Plessis and Chilliboy Ralapele.
It was like ice in the Bokke boots, our hearts in our throats, when these needless substitutions were made and ultimately nearly cost the Springboks the game.
When will the Bokke management ever learn that you do not HAVE TO make substitutions for the sake of substitutions. Why fix something that is NOT BROKEN ?
With this important win, the Bokke took the Freedom Cup and the Tri-Nations trophies.
Next week we see the All Blacks take on the Wallabies in the last Tri-Nations match of 2009,it having been reduced to a dead rubber, with the only thing at stake to see who ends SECOND and who ends LAST in ths year’s Tri-Nations.
Well done Bokke !

wasnt ’98 two in a row, pieta?
408@Ashley –
Agree Ashley, even JDV is our best 12 by far imo. He and Steyn must be chosen and maybe ad BJ to the mix.
@carol – Thanks Carol. On top of the world right now.
Was close but a win is a win.
417@Ashley –
Yes, Brussouw and Steyn were good. I really hope FDP gets the award. He has been playing consistenly good rugby for years.
@Supa Die Bloubul –
Hi Super Da Bull 🙂
I’ll not complain, some good performances today I agree. Would like to see the MoM shared around a bit because of this and would have liked FS because he’s taken so much flak but hell, he’s one of the ‘core players’ in the side as we saw last week (on the negative side). Mind you, can’t blame Pienaar, another who’s been farked around.
Can’t see why Ricky came on to replace FDP when one had someone like Pienaar on the bench.
As I said, PdV has his favourites and hands out caps to them every game. Worthy or not.
419@Pietman –
The commentators said 1949 was the last time we won three in a row.
Ek sal saam hom opstaan of val. 😆
418@Supa Die Bloubul –
stem saam. adi sal sy sokkies moet optrek.
…
😯 hey, eks nou op van saamstem met bloubulle!! die 3n is klaar, bring on the cc!!
@Puma – yes puma it does tri- nations 2010 and repeat wc camps 2011 then we are the best ever
PdV should buy Frans Steyn back from Metro. Why lose such a great, great talent to a 2nd Div Club in France and Steyn is only 22. Get him back. Also JdV should have stayed on. Especially now that he and JF are back playing together at centre.
Those monster kicks from Frans Steyn was brilliant.
@OCO –
You make a good point. All three of Steyn’s kicks were huge. You dont see someone kicking THREE 55m or more kicks over in NZL ever! That kept our momentum in the beginning, add to that Morne’s dropgoal.
@smallies72 – 429
Now to defend our wc title. That would be just magnificent if we could do that.
What a year for our Bokke. Probably the best Bok team ever. Also the best year for a Springbok side ever. Being number one in the world winning the series against the British and Irish Lions now winning the Tri-Nations. Just does not get better. Damn proud of the players and even PdV.
428@Ashley –
hehe…ja, nou is ons weer enemies!!!
@superBul –
Laerskool? 🙂
Faark me McGyver!
Waar, op Bosbokrant?
@Supa Die Bloubul –
And surely we need a better player than Ricky? Must be 4th or 5th best in SA now. But please not Bolla …
@Pietman –
Credit must go to PDV. Wether he is letting the senior players have more responsibility or not, he has an excellent record and seems to learn from his mistakes.
434@Supa Die Bloubul –
(phew) dankie tog!!
433@Puma –
South Africa:
s14 Champs
Sevens Champs
BIL champs
World Cup Champs
Tri-nations Champs
Suck on that Tackler!
@OCO – 425
Howzit Oco,
Agree Frans Steyn was just brilliant today. I would have liked him to get mom. Those two monster kicks were superb. No other kicker in rugby can do that at the moment.
Sharks are going to miss this youngster HUGE. Now hope he is not lost to the Boks either PdV should get him back here or still select him to play. He has finally found the right position to play FB. Said it all along and so many others did too.
Are you still in Kuwait?
436@OCO –
Jano Vermaak is awesome. He really deserves his chance. He stands out every match. Also as a good kicking game and scores tries with his little breaks!
438@Ashley –
Ja watchit, van nou af moet jy in jou spoor trap! 😉
@Supa Die Bloubul – 439
Correct and just one more to add there. NUMBER ONE IN THE WORLD…………HEEEEEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAA. Jeez feel great.
It was close in the end but we won that all that matters.
John Smit also got one back on Thorn with that monster tackle.
440@Puma –
Wacko Jacko can drop from his own 22. 🙄
@Puma – Maybe a good idea to get a supporters trust fund going to keep valuable players here. The deal done to get Victor back was a great example.
But then again give FS a year of , he only fires every 10th test. 😐
@OCO – 436
Vermaak or Kockott. But FdP is just world class. Hope he gets The Player Of The Year award this year.
@Puma – did you see how emotional snorrie was at the end of the game? he deserves all the praise that he will get that’s for certain.john smit had one of the best games of his life and must get the award for tackle of the series
443@Puma –
The best part is beating the Al Blacks THREE ZIP!
Ja, I enjoyed Smitties tackle on Thorn…he must have had the previous incident in the back of his mind!
444@Supa Die Bloubul –
…. with his knee,
but
then … he’s a bull!! hehehe
@superBul – 445
He has signed for two years. Pity. Think the more he plays at FB the better he would become. Only played there on a regular basis since the Lions tour. Why they put Ruan there for the test in Perth and Brisbane was crazy. FB should always be Frans Steyns position. Now that he is off he probably wont get selected.
Wish we could buy him back. So young to be heading over there. Only 22. Those two kicks today were awesome.
