The Springboks completed a 2009 Tri-Nations WHITE-WASH over the All Blacks and claimed the Tri-Nations title for 2009 by beating their rivals 32 / 29 in a thrilling match which went right to the wire.
The All Blacks clearly showed their intentions early on that they wanted to run the ball at the Bokke and initially they had good field position.
Frans Steyn kicked a monster penalty, from his own 10m line to open the scoring, then added another huge one. He later added a third monster penalty conversion.
Dan Carter pulled the score back repeatedly converting some dodgy penalties into points.
Morne Steyn was equally on song with the boot, calmly slotting a drop goal, 2 penalties and 2 conversions… for his 100% kicking record for the day.
The Springboks scored 2 tries, one through Fourie du Preez, the undoubted BEST RUGBY PLAYER IN THE WORLD, and an intercept try by Jean De Villiers.
The All Blacks also scored 2 tries, one through Sivivatu and one through captain Richie MacCaw.
The game was won up front again, with the Springboks reigning supreme in the line-outs and getting parity in the scrums (with the Bokke absolutely monstering one All Black scrum).
On the deck, the combination between Schalk Burger and Heinrich Brussouw worked almost flawlessly, one complimenting the other.
At the back of the scrum, Pierre Spies had mixed fortunes… battling to pick up ball behind the scrum but putting in some very special tackles.
At the half time break, the Springboks were up 22 / 12.
In the second half the All Blacks gave their all, clawing their way back slowly but surely and when they scored through MacCaw with a couple of minutes to go, it was nail biting stuff.
They nearly scored with time up, but the Springboks held fast to record en epic win.
When Schalk Burger went off injured and Bakkies was subbed, one could again see that it affected the Bokke. In comparison, the All Blacks subs provided more impetus to their game.
The Bokke coaching staff replaced Fourie Du Preez with Ricky Januarie, near the end and also brought on Adi Jacobs, Jannie du Plessis and Chilliboy Ralapele.
It was like ice in the Bokke boots, our hearts in our throats, when these needless substitutions were made and ultimately nearly cost the Springboks the game.
When will the Bokke management ever learn that you do not HAVE TO make substitutions for the sake of substitutions. Why fix something that is NOT BROKEN ?
With this important win, the Bokke took the Freedom Cup and the Tri-Nations trophies.
Next week we see the All Blacks take on the Wallabies in the last Tri-Nations match of 2009,it having been reduced to a dead rubber, with the only thing at stake to see who ends SECOND and who ends LAST in ths year’s Tri-Nations.
Well done Bokke !

How brilliant is that, come back and the Bokkes have done it….another win in N.Z !!
Well done lads…..Now I will have to read how the match unfolded!
I did see Frans brilliant kick before I left…..
hehehe AB’s just staring at the Boks stealing their thunder!
Now only the Cheetahs must win, and my weekend is A plus!
@Pietman – and the Sharks 🙂
The match between the All Blacks and the Wallabies now just a dead rubber…. to see who ends SECOND
@carol –
You saw Percy there, with the kickers, all geared up and anxious, looked like he was ready to take to the field himself!
@Pietman –
Cheetahs en Bulle!!
@K9-MonsterLeeu –
If the Cheetahs win, then the Sharks/Bulls game is not that important, logwise.
@Supa Die Bloubul –
Faaaark, Schalla het John amper uitgevat daar, met die kopstamp…
Maar JS het Thorn een befokte shot getekkel….moosa game gehad, ons keppie.
@Supa Die Bloubul –
Nah, FDP was good but not at his best. For sheer effort around the park and scoring points that turned the match and ultimately won it, FS was the player today. Was it 3 penalties from within his own half? Sole destroying for the opposition.
One mistake (knock on), zero tackles missed, zero turn-overs etc and how’s that keeping on his feet and making meters.
Schalla at 7 and with Brussouw at 6 makes an awesome combo !!
Schalla is now a Blind side flank !
@Pietman – Hi Piet, seriously bad timing I had an appointment in town and missed everything after Frans amazing kick….So I missed Percy too. Always keeping my eyes open to see Percy !!
Great to come back to see you lot celebrating the winning of the Tri Nations!!
@Pietman –
Nee man,as die Bulle wen kan ons nog n tuis semi kry!
371@Pietman –
Ja n helse tackle!
@OCO –
No, FDP had a great game!!!
373@carol – Eishhh, your timing for your appointment today really sucked !
I’m over the moon…. Bokke ensconsing their No 1 Ranking even further !
The All Blacks came back strongly though !
In the final analysis, a great win (never easy on NZ soil). PdV needs to rethink his bench though and maybe his starting line-up.
We lack penetration in the midfield, one or 2 breaks per game is not enough.
I would also consider ‘training’ Spies at #7. We missed Juan today and Schalk is not the answer. Spies also doesn’t have the ‘hands’ for a #8. Great physicallity but not the penetration for a #8.
Who was MOTM?
@grootblousmile – Thanks for the text!
You happy now? The Boks arranged that as your Birthday treat!! 🙂
@carol – How can she make an appointment for when the rugby is on 😯
@OCO – Hi Oco, long time…..have you got a Saffa to celebrate with over there or will you have to do your celebrating with your mates here?
@K9-MonsterLeeu –
FdP
@K9-MonsterLeeu – Sort of got a bit mixed up with the start times!!
Blonde moment it is called, still my toenails look spectacular now!! 😉
@Pietman – o okay……goeie keuse. Weer ‘n goeie game gehad.
@OCO – Wonder if he can be converted to be a lock?
@superBul – You disagree with me on what, #359?
Ek lees jou nie lekker daar nie….
@carol – whaaaaat?????? Had ur toenails done??? Thats even worse 😆
@Supa Die Bloubul –
Then we’ll disagree 🙂 he wasn’t up to his usual standards. Why oh why PdV subbed him though is beyond comprehension.
I think I’m correct that if you are one of PdV’s ‘chosen’ and on the bench then you get your cap, no matter what.
I think it will cost the Bokke eventually.
Otherwise, trust you are well and won’t have liver problems tomorrow :-)?
