The Springboks completed a 2009 Tri-Nations WHITE-WASH over the All Blacks and claimed the Tri-Nations title for 2009 by beating their rivals 32 / 29 in a thrilling match which went right to the wire.
The All Blacks clearly showed their intentions early on that they wanted to run the ball at the Bokke and initially they had good field position.
Frans Steyn kicked a monster penalty, from his own 10m line to open the scoring, then added another huge one. He later added a third monster penalty conversion.
Dan Carter pulled the score back repeatedly converting some dodgy penalties into points.
Morne Steyn was equally on song with the boot, calmly slotting a drop goal, 2 penalties and 2 conversions… for his 100% kicking record for the day.
The Springboks scored 2 tries, one through Fourie du Preez, the undoubted BEST RUGBY PLAYER IN THE WORLD, and an intercept try by Jean De Villiers.
The All Blacks also scored 2 tries, one through Sivivatu and one through captain Richie MacCaw.
The game was won up front again, with the Springboks reigning supreme in the line-outs and getting parity in the scrums (with the Bokke absolutely monstering one All Black scrum).
On the deck, the combination between Schalk Burger and Heinrich Brussouw worked almost flawlessly, one complimenting the other.
At the back of the scrum, Pierre Spies had mixed fortunes… battling to pick up ball behind the scrum but putting in some very special tackles.
At the half time break, the Springboks were up 22 / 12.
In the second half the All Blacks gave their all, clawing their way back slowly but surely and when they scored through MacCaw with a couple of minutes to go, it was nail biting stuff.
They nearly scored with time up, but the Springboks held fast to record en epic win.
When Schalk Burger went off injured and Bakkies was subbed, one could again see that it affected the Bokke. In comparison, the All Blacks subs provided more impetus to their game.
The Bokke coaching staff replaced Fourie Du Preez with Ricky Januarie, near the end and also brought on Adi Jacobs, Jannie du Plessis and Chilliboy Ralapele.
It was like ice in the Bokke boots, our hearts in our throats, when these needless substitutions were made and ultimately nearly cost the Springboks the game.
When will the Bokke management ever learn that you do not HAVE TO make substitutions for the sake of substitutions. Why fix something that is NOT BROKEN ?
With this important win, the Bokke took the Freedom Cup and the Tri-Nations trophies.
Next week we see the All Blacks take on the Wallabies in the last Tri-Nations match of 2009,it having been reduced to a dead rubber, with the only thing at stake to see who ends SECOND and who ends LAST in ths year’s Tri-Nations.
Well done Bokke !

hoe’s die senuwees?
South Africa captain John Smit may have provided the wisest counsel of the week for the All Blacks on the eve of tonight’s pivotal Tri-Nations test at Waikato Stadium in Hamilton.
Asked if his team shared the All Blacks’ frustration with the kick-heavy nature of test rugby this season, Smit needed only one line.
“Ah, the only frustration we share is for losing,” he said.
While the All Blacks have spent an intense week fretting over the ramifications of bonus points and the stifling nature of the game, the Springboks carry less baggage.
They arrived in Hamilton after a week on Australia’s Gold Coast and struck a remarkably relaxed group at their team hotel yesterday.
Smit used diplomacy and humour to gain favour with the media as he negotiated questions about his scrummaging, the team’s late arrival, and the historical significance of playing in Hamilton.
“They call it the dark side at tighthead. It’s because no-one else wants to do it,” Smit said when quizzed on an area the All Blacks will clearly target.
Though he had to relearn the tricks of a position he played as a kid, Smit believed his 10-month “apprenticeship” against the world’s top looseheads had been a success.
In contrast, it was a stern looking All Blacks camp that completed their captain’s run in light rain at the match venue.
The All Blacks’ themes this week have been matching the Springboks physically up front, playing territory and reducing their error rate.
It is ironic that the All Blacks have spent the season managing an injury crisis, selection debate and criticism of their game plan.
Coach Graham Henry has taken his side a long way since their first-up loss to France.
However, he still carries a rookie tighthead prop in Owen Franks, a raw lock in Isaac Ross, no cover at lock and a patched-together backline.
Make no mistake, the All Blacks are behind the eight-ball, nine points to be precise, defending their Tri-Nations crown and desperate not to lose three times in a row to their old foe.
The All Blacks must heed Smith’s advice and ruthlessly seek a win.
It does not need to be pretty.
There is no doubt the All Blacks will front for a scrap skipper Richie McCaw will demand it, and halfback Jimmy Cowan will relish it.
But to win, McCaw will need big games from his key men.
Tony Woodcock must dominate Smit at scrum time, Carter must ensure the game is played in the opposition’s half and the backs must finish.

KEY AREAS
SCRUMS AND LINEOUTS:
Both sides will be chasing the psychological high ground, the All Blacks at scrumtime, the Boks at the lineout. South African captain John Smit will be targeted by All Black loosehead Tony Woodcock after his wobbles against Australia. Springbok lock Victor Matfield has become the All Blacks’ nemesis this season, getting in their minds to the point of distraction. Matfield appears to be able to wait for the throw and still beat his opposites to their own ball. The All Blacks simplified in Sydney and threw to the front, using Kieran Read to good effect, and would do well to repeat the tactic.
TERRITORY:
Dan Carter almost single-handedly solved this issue for the All Blacks against Australia in his comeback match and will again play a key role. Stephen Donald is on his home ground, giving the All Blacks two boots either side of the ruck to plug the corners. The Boks have massive boots in Morne Steyn at first-five and Frans Steyn at fullback, and a tactical genius in halfback Fourie Du Preez. If it’s wet, tactical kicking may decide this match.
DISCIPLINE:
The All Blacks have been poor all season, and even when they beat Australia they allowed Matt Giteau to kick six penalties. They must gain the favour of referee Nigel Owens or South African first-five Morne Steyn will simply kick his side to victory. Playing at the right end of the park will be vital because in the modern game it is nigh on impossible not to give away penalties at the breakdown.
LATEST: Juan Smith is out.
