The Leopards will come to Loftus Versfeld on Friday knowing full well that matters can’t get much worse for them, but also that a win against the Blue Bulls in the Currie Cup could be worth more than the platinum that drives their sponsorship from the Royal house of Bafokeng. There can’t be any guessing on what may happen on Friday night and the Leopards, who are without a win or a point in the competition, will be in damage control mode as they will be expecting the Bulls to come at them like hyenas to a kill. That is the general expectation of any fan of the Bulls and it wouldn’t be far fetched to say that even some of the Bulls personnel will be thinking of an easy win on Friday night.

But rugby is a funny sport and, as unpredictable as the bounce of the oval ball is, this could easily be the game that the Leopards have targeted to make their turnaround. The Bulls could be in for a rude awakening.

It is by no stroke of luck that the Leopards are playing in the Premier Division of the Currie Cup but it is probably through their inexperience at the highest level of the domestic game that they have found it hard to keep abreast of the pack.

However, not all is lost and if the Bulls walk on with the complacency and arrogance of many of the big unions then they could be in for a rude awakening.

And this is a warning that Bulls coach Frans Ludeke will have been sounding to his players the whole week.

But there would be no need to read the Riot Act to the Bulls who have tasted the sweetness of victory this season and also sipped in gulps the bitter and unsavoury taste of losing.

There is no doubt in the minds of the Bulls players that winning still remains the ultimate feeling and doing it at full throttle at Loftus will truly put them on track to attain their goals for this season. Individual goals will only be enhanced by a collectively good performance

Nothing like a weak Bulls team exists and even though Ludeke made a handful of changes they have done more to enhance the Bulls prospects for Friday night. What Ludeke has been able to do well for this game was to dangle the carrot for the fringe players in the Bulls squad, creating a healthy environment of competitiveness that will play itself out on the field. Not everyone can be in the match 22 but there is an equal chance for all to make it by putting in good performances on the field and that is what the Bulls will want to do.

But individual goals will only be enhanced by a collectively good performance which will force everyone under the leadership of Dewald Potgieter to collect a win with five points first before playing for a place in the real match 22.

While having played little rugby in the past few weeks of the first round of the Currie Cup, the likes of Frik Kirsten, Dean Greyling, Bandise Maku, Fudge Mabeta and Stephan Dippenaar will have to step up and fulfil the talent and potential that they showed in their formative years.

It is obvious that they would have preferred showing off their talents against a more glamorous side such as the Sharks, Western Province, Cheetahs or Lions but it is not a bad thing that one is given freedom of expression against the whipping boys of the competition.

It may be unthinkable that the Leopards could cause an upset at Loftus but it would be something of a shambles if the Bulls, like other teams, don’t bag a full house of points as expected.

2008’s champions against 2008’s also-rans – and this time it is to determine the log leaders of this year’s Currie Cup when the Sharks play Griquas in Durban on Saturday.

Just as hard-fought should be the clash at Newlands on Saturday between Western Province and the Lions, who have lost their two best loose forwards for the clash.

In Bloemfontein, the Free State Cheetahs will want to show against Boland that they have turned the corner after a poor start.

Having said that, dink ek die Bulle gaan steeds ‘n decent genoeg score opsit. My 18 lyk maar bra eina nou vir my.
