The Vodacom Blue Bulls scored four tries in their 25-24 victory over the Griquas in a packed GWK Stadium in Kimberley on Saturday.

In the opening minutes it was clear that both teams are going to have a full go at one another and although neither managed to score a try in the first ten minutes the Griquas were the first to get on the score sheet when Naas Olivier landed a penalty in the 7th minute.

It was good to see that the Blue Bulls were scrumming a tad better than against the Cheetahs and with Wilhelm Steenkamp and Flip van der Merwe spoiling a couple of the Griquas’ lineouts the team from Pretoria had most of the initiative in the first quarter.

The Bulls continued to put a lot of pressure on the Griquas and in the 16th minute captain Derick Kuün went over for the Bulls’ first try thanks to some good mauling by the forwards.

Francois Brummer missed the conversion and with Olivier slotting his second penalty in the 19th minute Dawie Theron’s team were leading 6-5, but it has to be said that the majority of the first quarter was played in Griquas’ half.

With Brummer and Olivier adding a penalty each the Griquas were back in the lead and in the 33rd minute Egon Seconds extended this lead when he scored the home team’s first try of the match after following up Jonathan Mokuena’ cross kick.

Olivier missed the conversion but the Bulls were right back in the game thanks to a terrific try from Francois Hougaard but unfortunately Brummer missed the conversion and that meant the Griquas were leading 14-13 at the break.

The Bulls had ample possession in the first 40 minutes and the vast majority of the match was played in Griquas’ half but in spite of this Theron’s men were outstanding on the ground and it had the result that the Bulls, who were quite heavily penalised, could not generate the momentum that they wanted to.

Shortly after half time the Griquas’ reserve hooker Rayno Barnes went over for their second try when Hougaard’s kick was charged down and with Brummer missing his third attempt in the 48th minute coach Frans Ludeke decided to send on Burton Francis.

With more than 30 minutes to play Ludeke also used Pedrie Wannenburg and Zane Kirchner as impact players but in spite of the reinforcements the Bulls’ lineout and scrum work weren’t as effective as in the first 40 minutes.

With 20 minutes to play and the Griquas leading 19-13, Springbok Chiliboy Ralepelle and the young talented Frik Kirsten were unleashed but the team from Kimberley continued their rampant form when left wing Trompie Nontshinga extended their lead to 24-13.

Luckily the Bulls got themselves right back into the game via a Gerhard van den Heever try and after this they were playing with a renewed kind of vigour as well as a lot of energy.

The Blue Bulls knew a converted try would take them into the lead and when Rohan Kitshoff as well as Mokuena got yellow cards in the last five minutes Wannenburg bulldozed over to score the Bulls’ bonus point try.

Francis converted and that meant the Bulls pulled off a very dramatic, but highly entertaining away victory.

Scorers:

Vodacom Blue Bulls: Tries: Derick Kuün, Francois Hougaard, Gerhard van den Heever, Pedrie Wannenburg. Conversions: Burton Francis (1). Penalties: Brummer (1).

GWK Griquas: Tries: Egon Seconds, Rayno Barnes, Trompie Nontshinga. Penalties: Olivier (3).

Liewe Rapport se eerste sport berig begin so-

    Haaie verorber Leeus

    Looks like I missed GBS.

I have a question for the forum. I’ve been reading about the “fake blood” scandal involving the Harlequins club in the Heineken Cup. I read that Dick Best was quoted as saying that the use of blood capsules to fake blood injuries in the Guinness Premiership is quite common. Does this happen in South African rugby? Pretty sleazy if you ask me. Is this a trend towards the tricks & gimmicks of professional wrestling? 🙁

  • 46

45@JimT – To be honest, I have not heard of such misuse in South Africa yet… no whiff of it so far… would actually be interesting to dig into whether any of the Journalists have heard rumours in this regard….

  • 47

@JimT – I read about that, it is pretty poor to use fake blood and capsules
In SA they bleed real blood 😆

  • 48

@grootblousmile – Quintus van Rooyen was the King when he was still alive and writing for the Bulls to the Beeld

  • 49

    48@JL1 – Hellooooooooooooo

You have finally landed here…. so what do you think of the blog !!

Yeah, Quintus van Blouwen was very one-eyed in favour of the Bulls… but he was a master statistitian and a very good Journalist… may he rest in Blue peace..

  • 50

JL1 welcome here , you WILL enjoy the clean air.

  • 51

@grootblousmile – Dick Best seems to be a “straight shooter” from what I can tell. He did coach in SA right & is well known? I suppose the cynics will claim that this is what one can expect from the game going professional.

The coach involved in this case has resigned & although fines were levied & suspensions dished out the case is not over. Evidently the player suspended is revealing more info as part of his appeal against suspension. It gets weirder. Upon returning to the dressing room, after leaving the field, they cut his mouth with a scalpel to generate real blood & fool the doctors in attendance. If this is proven true then the club may be subject to further fines/bans which could jeopardise its financial future. Oh what a web we weave, to deceive 🙁

  • 52

@JL1 – Right, lol, the honourable way to go. Can you imagine Bakkies carrying a blood capsule around in his sock? 🙂

  • 53

51@JimT – Very bloody interesting (pun intended)

    Hehehe

  • 54

GBS it’s time for the front row to offer an opinion/verdict on the new forum, …ummmmm …. it’s great, an excellent job. You are all to be commended, keep up the good work. When do we expect to see some ads?

WALLABIES discard Lote Tuqiri yesterday showed why he’s still regarded as the best winger in international rugby, dominating proceedings in his first match since June.

Despite his unfair dismissal case against the Australian Rugby Union still being before the courts, Tuqiri looked anything but a man with the weight of the world on his shoulders after having his $1.2 million-a-year contract torn up in July.

Playing for West Harbour for nothing more then a few snags and a beer, the dreadlocked speedster had a hand in everything in the narrow 23-16 loss to Warringah in the Shute Shield match – despite wearing the No.11 jumper.

  • 56

@JimT – No that would be funny!

@superBul – Yes, I was on here a couple of weeks ago but went away on holiday and only cam back yesterday

Just shows you, go on holiday and everything changes

  • 57

@superBul – In the land of the blind, the man with one eye is king they say

Did the ball have a bell inside, by any chance?

  • 58

Reading some articles in the NZ and AUS press, this next game is good for us , they are going to destroy each other. Hell we put the cat amongst the pigeons thats for sure.

  • 59

WOW,I log on to find ENGLISH !!!

    Hi All…..

  • 60

@superBul – Kiwis need Chris Jack and Ali Williams and Dan Carter and somehow or somewhere they need to find a scrumhalf. Jusitn Marshall is playing better than the lot they got now

Australia need old Justin “good for a line of coke at Bath” Harrison, Owen Finnegan and Rocky Elsom and maybe Chris Latham, then they will be better
