Fourie stays with the Lions

Johannesburg – Like fellow-Springbok centre Wynand Olivier, whose name had also been linked to Western Province and the Stormers, the Golden Lions’ Jaque Fourie will continue playing his rugby for his present union.

The Golden Lions Rugby Union (GLRU) on Friday confirmed that Fourie has a fixed term contract of employment with the union until October 31 next year.

The GLRU are not releasing him, they say in a statement, and are looking forward to his return from Springbok duty.

Friday’s statement confirms that the GLRU “until Friday have not received any request from Western Province to enter into negotiations with Jaque Fourie.”

In terms of South African Rugby Union’s and the International Rugby Board’s regulations it is expressly prohibited to induce or attempt to induce any contracted player who has a written agreement with a union, unless prior written consent of that union has been obtained.

“Western Province is, therefore, inducing a breach of contract. The GLRU believes that rugby contracts between Unions and players must be honoured and respected. There should be no tolerance when it comes to contractual breaches, whether by other unions or the player,” the statement concluded.

** The Blue Bulls Company (Pty) Ltd (BBC) on Thursday announced Olivier has extended his contract with the BBC for a further two years and will, therefore, play for the Bulls and Blue Bulls until the end of the 2011 season. Olivier’s name had also been linked to Western Province and the Stormers, who are losing their captain and top centre Jean de Villiers to Munster.
